Cerebro 1.1

Cerebro 1.1 has been submitted to the bigboss repository. This update fixes battery issues as well as the login issue. Because of the huge response we got to the app in such a short term, our servers have been slammed non-stop so we have added a neat little feature called “push update” which should decrease the load on our servers. Currently, we have to shut down the push recording database because it has been hit too hard. It will be up again by tomorrow at midnight.

If you feel angered about this, just remember that Cerebro is a free service and we would like to keep it free in the future by smart code instead of huge costly servers, but smart code may take some time to develop. We have been blessed with many comments from users and we will keep developing for this project.

Thanks,

Chris Alvares

I entered cydia to uninstall cerebro because it was draining TOO MUCH battery. I hope that with 1.1 the battery issue is solved.

Sounds like a great update. I’ll let you know about my experience. Does this mean the daemon is gone?

Btw, what number does the badge on the Cerebro app icon display? It says “33″ in my case…

    Thanks!

  14. Norberto says:

I did download the 1.1 update but I still feel battery consumption is high with this app, any comments or solutions?, I feel is a very good aplication but the battery problem should be looked into, considering that 3Gs are battery friendly by themselves, thanks

  15. Norberto says:

    Sorry, I mean “Battery Unfriendly”

  16. Norberto E says:

I just made a mistake 3Gs “are friendly” with batteries is the opposite.

How do I sign up to this service, free or otherwise? The app wants a login and I can’t find any link anywhere in which to create this. I understand it’s free but things need to be clearer.

    Installed v1.0, still don’t see v1.1.

Setting up an account: just launch the app from the iPhone, enter the information you want to use, Email Address, Password, etc. and submit it… that’s it. Next time you open up the app on the iPhone or via a browser on your desktop, use the same Email Address and Password.

Accuracy is way off… it’s like 3000m off :-( Yes I’ve monkeyed with settings..

  25. Kaenista says:

Have you already release source code of your software?
    I can’t find it anywhere.
    Thank’s for this great job.

  26. UpscaleRiver says:

Not yet, we are making sure there are no security risks before we release it.

  27. Bill says:

    Hi guys,
Chris, great job for the service howto on your blog,
can’t wait to see the new source code, as I want to implement my personal tracking service of my phone. I’m a bit paranoid and don’t really feel like letting anyone but me have access to my phone’s location… Hackers and govs always gain access to it when it’s well known ( google is more than happy to provide all they have on you if asked :( ).

However, I think cerebro would need a stolen mode ( get the new number from the phone if sim card was switched ) and a gps tracking interval + enabled/disabled option, user settable on the website. As well scheduled tracking intervals (no need to update at night time) could increase battery life.

Thank’s for the great work and keeping stuff opensourced !

  28. Chris says:

Great app. I was literally getting my dev environment together to build it myself when I stumbled onto yours. So glad you’re open-sourcing it.

    A couple things:

    - If you set a custom options/location/live update URL, pushing for a location update does not work (and neither does turning on live updates). I never see the app hit my endpoint except at the predetermined update interval. Sonar still works and I can send push messages to the phone though. Ideally I want to be sure my location information is never sent to the default servers.

    - How are you doing push notifications?

    - Your app’s name is misspelled in the icons at the top of the page here:
    http://upscaleriver.com/apps/buyortrash.php

  29. Chris says:

I ask about push notifications of course because I want to build my own admin console that pushes notifications to Cerebro. This way I have no reliance on your servers at all.

it is it cannot unlink to my old iphone.. But thx anyway
    for a good application !!!

thanks for the source of the original daemon.

    changed:
    - for theft stealing i added sending the imsi number and last dialed number

  32. Trisky says:

    @Chris

I would like to do that!!

  33. E.T. says:

There needs to be a way to check / alter the login in credietials. I accidentally put in an in correct email address on one of my phones and there is no way to alter the setting :(
I’ve searched through the phones internal folders via WinSCP wih no luck.

  34. Tom says:

I was trying to minimize battery usage. So I added:
    - shouldSleep in CAPowerManagement.m was wrong (see with NSLog activated); iPhone is prevented of going to sleep

    - added if([nextTarget timeIntervalSinceNow] < 1 || (nextTarget == nil)) { to start function in CALocationDelegate.m; because of possible crossing the "sleeping-timer" (with nextTarget and wakeUp) and the "normal running-timer", it's necessary to check if the other one has already triggered an update.

    other stuff:
    - added code from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/202299/logging-to-a-file-on-the-iphone#2103091 to main.m to log to file (made debugging a lot of easier)

    - added battery level http://blog.coriolis.ch/2009/02/14/reading-the-battery-level-programmatically/

  35. Tom says:

    - added sending sms when imsi differs from default imsi (=new sim inserted, phone stolen) to obtain new phone number – http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=212070
    - added loading of local settings, remote settings file
    - added option to upload files

Hi!!!! My iPhone is not geting the message from the web… What can i do? Thanks!!!!

  44. Hey guys!

As a thank you to Chris and UpscaleRiver on such an awesome piece of software, and as a fun weekend project, I’ve created a php script that will allow users of Cerebro to easily track their own coordinates. It’s not exactly for the beginner, but if you have a web-accessible server and know how to set up a basic MySQL database, you can point Cerebro’s “URL of recording” setting to this script. It will not only record your location data but also display them in a super useful format readable on the web or with an iPhone.

One caveat: I’m not the world’s greatest programmer and I haven’t put any security features into this script, so use it at your own risk.

Just click on my name above to download it, unzip it, and open it up for instructions.

  45. Just thought I’d post here for the benefit of those having the same problems i did after upgrading to the iOS 4 jailbreak.

When I upgraded to the jailbroken iOS4, Cerebro stopped transmitting my location (though sending my phone messages and everything else worked perfectly). To fix this, I looked up Cerebro in Cydia, tapped the Modify button, and tapped Reinstall. After it reinstalled, it instantly started working again.

  46. Alright, found another problem with Cerebro and iOS 4. It seems that after a while, it randomly starts transmitting coordinates once per minute instead of the interval specified in the settings, even if LiveUpdates are switched off. After some tinkering, I discovered that toggling LiveUpdates on and off fixes this temporarily, but the problem comes back. I have yet to find a permanent workaround.

On the upside, I updated my Phone Finder script to fix an IE bug and to make it work better with LiveUpdates. It’s still available by clicking on my name above.

  47. Just wanted to let you guys know that I’ve updated my Phone Finder script to version 1.5. It includes many needed bug fixes an enhancements including improvements to the accuracy of the displayed data, more options for the amount of data to analyze, and new map markers for the most recently visited locations.

You can get the latest version by clicking on my name above. Enjoy!

  48. Announcing the Phone Finder 2.0!
This is a major revision of the Phone Finder that includes:

    - Identification of the street addresses where the phone is located and where it has spent time in the past
    - Automatic MySQL table setup to greatly improve ease of installation (this won’t affect current installations)
    - Numerous fixes to many glaring bugs about which I am actually a bit embarrassed

Again, just click my name above to get the file, and open it in a text editor for instructions.

I’ve also done some more work trying to figure out the constant update bug with Cerebro installations on iOS4, but I have made little progress. I haven’t even been able to nail down any pattern to its appearances. I haven’t given up yet, but I’m hoping more and more that Cerebro 2.0 is still under development and will help. At this point, I’d be willing to pay money for a fix.
